Every year law enforcement officers are privileged to help families in need with a program called, Shop with a Cop. Officers from different police agencies throughout the county and state, participate in fund raising programs to earn money that funds the Shop with a Cop program. We have the opportunity to do this twice with the agency that I work for. We raise money with a local restaurant that allows us to earn tips from guests at the restaurant. The servers are very delighted to have their own Cop, to boss around for an evening and help with their job. Not sure if we help or get in the way, but we try. It’s hard work! All donations go to the Shop with Cop program and give each child a gift card to use at a department store. They are paired with a Police Officer and get to go for a front seat ride in a patrol car, with lights and sirens of course! It is somewhat overwhelming to see all of the cars lined up knowing what they are there for. The children are taken to the Festival of Lights, breakfast, and then on to the best part; shopping for presents! I have been honored with this activity for four years. It is humbling and rewarding to see a child sometimes choose to get gifts for all of his/her family and pick little for themselves. Our Chief makes it priority to give children here in our city a little extra help. I see service that is given from so many people and I am grateful for the men and women that commit to such a wonderful cause.
