I had a humbling experience... I am a police officer and was on duty, sitting in my patrol car at subway on an abandoned vehicle that was reported. An old man, dressed in ragged clothing, walking with a limp, approached me. His hair was long and gray, and he obviously didn't have any money. As he approached my window I said to myself, "oh great, what does this guy want." while rolling down my window. He then proceeded to tell me that he appreciated what I do and asked if he could buy me lunch to show his appreciation. I respectfully declined. I told him I had already had lunch but that I was very touched by his offer and thankful for his expression of gratitude. As I sat there for a few minutes after he left I began to get tears in my eyes. I will never forget his kindness. I felt horrible for thinking what I had before, assuming this guy was going to ask for help and what a burden it would be. Instead this man showed appreciation for me, and though he obviously did not have anything to offer he still managed to offer what he could, a small gesture of gratitude. I am thankful for that man and the lesson he taught me that day. I received an act of service from someone who probably needed more than i did.
Christmas is awesome! and I am thankful for the spirit of giving it brings!
